OFFICIAL COURT REPORTERS POSITIONS

Salaries are determined within the range of $42,420.00 – $79,798.00 annually, based upon years of experience and certifications.

An Official Court Reporter in the North Carolina Judicial Branch records proceedings in court trials, hearings, and conferences using either stenotype or voice writing reporting methods; accurately transcribes the record of court proceedings and delivers certified transcripts in a timely fashion pursuant to applicable rules; reads aloud, as circumstances require, statements made by participants during court proceedings; ensures that evidence has been properly introduced and marked as an exhibit; takes dictation of orders and findings of fact and types them for a judge’s signature; maintains files, notes, tapes, and records to facilitate later reference and use; responds to inquiries from court personnel, attorneys, citizens, and prisoners; completes activity reports and travel reimbursement forms, and submits them to the Administrative Office of the Courts in a timely fashion.  Though supervised on a daily basis by the presiding judge, the Resident Reporter position reports to the Court Reporting Manager and is subject to assignments in various judicial districts as court coverage dictates.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; court rules, regulations, procedures, and operations; legal and various specialized terminology; and transcript format and style.
Skilled in transcribing notes rapidly and accurately; and using court reporting hardware.
Ability to take dictation rapidly and accurately for extended periods of time at a speed sufficient to have attained the required certification; accurately transcribe notes; type a volume of material over a sustained period of time within deadlines; maintain confidentiality; and represent the court in a manner consistent with its decorum.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from high school and current certification from the National Court Reporters Association as a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) or the National Verbatim Reporters Association as a Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR ) .Candidates with advanced level certification such as Registered Merit Reporter (RMR), Certificate of Merit (CM), Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR), or Realtime Verbatim Reporter (RVR) also desired. Completion of a court reporting program either approved by the National Court Reporters Association, endorsed by the National Verbatim Reporters Association, or sponsored by an institute of higher learning preferred but not required.
